Bosnian National Theater Zenica was founded in the early 1950s. During its 60-year existence BNT Zenica has grown into the most significant institution of art in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. Repertoire of the theatre was carefully assembled to be modern and socially engaged. The theatre presented plays of some of the most important world's dramatists and a number of Bosnian and South Slavic authors. Throughout its history BNT has established a distinctive reputation and taken a significant place within the family of theaters in B&H.
It has participated and received awards in numerous theater festivals and artistic gatherings in ex-Yugoslavia, presenting the most significant theatrical works – the theatre performed in Montenegro, Czech Republic, Croatia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Germany, Poland, Slovenia and Serbia. Throughout the years it has been awarded numerous times for its productive work and artistic achievements.
Besides these achievements, BNT Zenica has been the organizer and host to various cultural and entertainment programs and events, significant for the cultural life in the city itself, as well as in the Zenica-Doboj Canton.
Theater's production capacities allow it to premiere 9 to 11 plays during one theater season, three of which are for children and youth. Guided by the ambition to follow the trends and contribute to resolving dilemmas of a modern man, BNT in its creative process clearly chooses to nurture and affirm Bosnian-Herzegovian literary and theatrical heritage. Special attention is paid to dramatization of important prose works by national and foreign authors, as well as the affirmation of young dramatists.
Today, Bosnian National Theatre represents the center and meeting point of not only theater life, but artistic and cultural life overall.
